In 1999, the Heartland Museum took its first steps towards becoming the largest museum in Wright County. But its story doesn't start there. The museum's roots are woven from the passions and dedication of five distinct groups: tractor collectors, Teddy Bear collectors, Hat collectors, Wright County Historical Society, and Clarion Arts Council. These visionaries shared a unique perspective of what their small town could be with the right kind of cultural treasure.
Building a Community Hub
The Heartland Museum has become the heart of Clarion, routinely welcoming over 1,800 visitors each year, with a peak year of over 4,000. Beyond being a repository of historical items, the museum serves as a dynamic hub for the community. It offers a versatile community room for rent to the public, extending its generosity to support other local groups like the Retail Group, Iowa Extension, EMTs, and more. It's the museum's way of giving back to those who enrich its mission.
A Tradition of Giving
As the Heartland Museum approaches its 25th anniversary, it's gearing up to make it an exceptional celebration. The museum extends its spirit of giving by offering free rentals to the community, providing free programs for the public, participating in community events whenever possible, and awarding an annual scholarship. The challenge? To continually bring in more visitors.
Evolving for Excellence
For the Heartland Museum, adaptation is key. To remain vibrant and enticing, the museum constantly evolves, reworking its ads, promotions, website, and social media presence. This commitment to staying current has paid off, with an overwhelmingly positive response from its visitors who frequently describe it as "AWESOME!"
The Path Forward
The Heartland Museum envisions a promising future. Plans include erecting a new building to expand displays, such as a section with stalls resembling a barn for showcasing animal-related equipment, more vehicles on display, enlarging the "fire department" section, and creating a 1960s-themed room. However, these dreams require resources, including approximately $500,000 to build the space and additional funds to complete it.
